I don’t get much time to post international events but this was on the news so over to ACCU weather to collect some info

“A winter storm which has brought power outages, icy conditions and travel delays across much of the Central and Southern states is spreading heavy snow across parts of the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic as an icy mix expands across the Carolinas.”

“This next push of arctic air is expected to bring air that is just as cold, or even colder than the air that brought subzero lows to the Midwest and Northeast during the weekend.

Millions will shiver from Chicago to New York City as record lows are challenged during this bitter blast. Records may also fall across parts of the Southeast where temperatures manage to fall into the teens and single digits.

Such cold will be dangerous to those who lose power during the current ice storm.
Floridians will even experience a taste of the arctic chill with temperatures dipping down to the lower 30s in cities such as Orlando.”

Ice age is already here in northern Ohio. We had the coldest february high yesterday and the coldest february low this morning of my lifetime, and I am 54. Not to add 2 years of no spring and summer.”

  3. FEB 2015.. North American Temperature extremes

Thanks to XMETMAN for this info

The recent extreme cold that is affecting northeast America is producing anomalies of more than (or should that be less than) -8°C across the southern Great Lakes on the mean temperature anomaly chart for the period 9-18th of February 2014. Strangely the warm air that produced anomalies of greater than +12°C over central Canada and much of the west of North America for the period 20-29th January 2015 went by with little mention at all.

  4. How New England and Boston’s Snow Measures Up In The Record Books
    FEBRUARY 2015

You may wonder if this extended snowy blitz is setting records. Below, we have a rundown of heaviest snowstorm, snowiest month and season lists for the hardest hit parts of New England.
-Winter Storms Juno and Marcus each made the top 10 heaviest Boston snowstorms, all-time.
-In just over two years, we’ve had three of the top seven heaviest snowstorms in Boston.

February has obliterated the previous snowiest month on record in Boston.
-Speaking of seasonal snowfall, 2014-2015 is now the second snowiest season on record. In the last 21 years, Boston has now had 4 of its top 5 snowiest seasons.

Mass evacuation as rain strains tallest US dam

a nice photogallery of the dams spillway
Almost 200,000 people were under evacuation orders in northern California on Monday after a threat of catastrophic failure at the tallest dam in the United States.

Officials said the danger had subsided for the moment as water levels at the Oroville Dam, 75 miles (120 kilometers) north of San Francisco, had eased. But people were still being told to stay away.

Several weeks of heavy rain filled the 770-foot (235-meter) high dam to capacity.

The threat comes not from the dam itself, which the California Department of Water Resources said was not in danger of collapse, but an emergency spillway that channels excess water.

A giant hole opened in the dam’s main spillway last week, forcing the authorities to activate the emergency overflow channel on Saturday for the first time.

But it began eroding, threatening a rupture that would have sent water surging toward the valley below, media reported.”
