EXTRACTS

WHAT IS ACORN?

“ACORN-SAT is a complete re-analysis of the Australian homogenised temperature database. It replaces two homogenised datasets – an annual dataset dating back to 1910 and a daily dataset dating back to 1950.”

WHICH WEATHER STATIONS ARE USED?

“The ACORN-SAT dataset includes data from 112 locations across Australia which provide homogenised, ground-based temperature records. The locations are chosen to maximise the length of record and network coverage across the country. Combined, these stations hold over 100 years of records.

“I wanted to make a start showing how the daily ACORN SAT (Australian Climate Observations Reference Network – Surface Air Temperature) adjustments vary from day to day – seemingly inexplicably. Interesting patterns appear – the reasons for which we can only speculate on. Note that from 1 March 1979 to present time raw data was not adjusted.”

“The Bureau maintains a layered approach to correcting data errors. Automated and semi-automated quality control systems are used to identify observational errors.”

    http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/change/acorn-sat/#tabs=Methods

I can give an example of this
While studying daily forecast temps’ in Horsham a few years ago , l had taken some screen dump snaps of forecast max temps’ for Horsham and the final outcome from the bureaus daily observations
I had noted that the maximum temperature for the day was a few degrees higher than forecast
    Not unusual
But what did surprise me was when l snapped the next day obs and forecast data
I went back to the obs’ and found that one deg C had been sheared off the weather stations forecast , making it closer to the predicted forecast
I thought that someone had tampered
However the statement above suggests that the adjustments are automated?

  3. ACORN is the 4th or 5th attempt by the BoM to settle on a “warmed up” dataset – starting with Torok & Nicholls in the mid-1990’s. In time ACORN will be superceded by something else which the BoM will again beat up as the greatest thing since sliced bread. I am hoping something good comes out of the Federal MP Dr Dennis Jensen taking an interest in BoM treatment of temperature data.

  4. Hey. Thanks for that info’ ‘wazsah’.

I find homogenisation especially grating when the data is checked, adjusted, homogenised and then re-homogenised and then adjusted and re-invented

Is there a raw data set we can look at with out the homogenisation?

The satellite data is going to become more crucial for observing temp’ anomalies for people like me who have have lost faith in BOM/CSIRO adjustments because l just don’t understand what and why they did to the raw data.
If l am meant to just trust them.??.
I could if they weren’t so …100% AGW supporters

  5. WARWICK shows us how much of the temperature data set was altered in 1997 at the Giles weather station.
He uses this station as an example . In fact ALL ACORN weather stations had adjustments

    GILES DATA SHIFTING ANALYSIS
Look at this graph.. It shows how much data had temps’ reduced and how much data had temps’ increased
Any un-modified data would sit on the zero line of Warwicks graph

In fact an incredibly small portion of data was unchanged

Fiddling Temperatures for Bourke: Part 1, Hot Days

    http://jennifermarohasy.com/2014/03/fiddling-temperatures-for-bourke-part-1-hot-days/

“The record high temperature of 51.7 degree C recorded on 3rd January 1909, after the installation of the Stevenson Screen, has been expunged from the official record on the basis it must be an observational or clerical error. ”
    ..
“temperatures at nearby Brewarrina (97km), which also set records on that day

But this isn’t the only temperature record that has been changed or removed since the installation of a Stevenson screen at Bourke. Through a process of what the Bureau refers to as data “homogenisation” almost all of Australia’s temperature records have been changed in the development of the Australian Climate Observations Reference Network – Surface Air Temperatures (ACORN-SAT).
Dr Blair Trewin is actually the climate scientists who oversees the ongoing development of this official data set.

It has resulted in changes to many of the original temperature records for Bourke. For example, a recording of 47.5 degree C on 28th January 1913 has been changed to 46.6 degree C, a recording of 48.3 degree C on the 10th January 1939 has been changed to 47.9 degree C and the list of changes goes on and on.

Why? Why tamper with the original recordings after a Stevenson screen was put in place?

…”Instead it truncates the data, and then makes adjustments

until there is no evidence of a cooling trend

The Northern Miner, Tuesday 5th January 1909 included the following news: “SYDNEY JANUARY 4. The severity of the heat wave is shown by the official returns of the temperatures for the 48 hours ended at 9am this morning. In some instances the records are the highest for thirty years. They include Bourke 125 degrees in the shade. Brewarina 123, Pilliga 123…” Reference in the same article is later made to Walgett recording a temperature of 112.

Here l have screen dumped some climate data from Kempsey airport 2014
You can see the data is italicized.
The Notes say this data is not quality controlled
This means at a later time the data is checked and modified according to apparently a set of criteria
Thought l would copy this to see exactly what the changes made were

Wonder how long it takes for someone to come along and change them.

An INDEPENDENT ASSESSMENT OF ACORN by KEN’S KINGDOM

Here is an example and link

    http://kenskingdom.wordpress.com/2014/05/16/the-australian-temperature-record-revisited-a-question-of-balance/

    CONCLUSION
    quote
“While the number of positive and negative adjustments made by the creators of Acorn may be balanced or nearly so, their effect on the minimum temperature record is enormous. Analysis of a not insignificant sample of 83 of 104 Acorn sites shows a warming bias in adjustments to minima of 45 %, which has the effect of increasing the network-wide temperature trend by 66.6 %. The adjustments have predominantly cooled pre-1971 temperatures and warmed post-1971 temperatures. For maxima, the increase in trend is 13 %.

This result casts doubt on the veracity of the Acorn temperature record, and its usefulness for climate analysis..

    “RE: picture of temperature sensors
Hmmm. Located at an intersection where cars are often stationary in peak hour traffic
also moving cars produce wind eddys distributing the heat from the TARMAC of the road

A good selection for a site if you wanted to load the data with warm temperatures.
Why didn’t they select a cooler spot.. away from the hot tar made roads and hot exhaust fumes from cars

  12. If you want to see how various attempts to modify the temperature record can produce some amazingly different result

    The Hon Greg Hunt MP,
    Minister for the Environment.

    Dear Minister Hunt,

I wrote to you on 4th March 2014 with concerns that the claims made by the Bureau of Meteorology that 2013 was Australia’s hottest year on record, are somewhat deceptive. In that letter I explained that the official temperature record has been truncated to begin in 1910 (thereby excluding the hot years of the Federation drought) and that the method used to calculate the annual average temperature for Australia is not transparent…

  15. WARWICK AND IAN GEORGE CONTINUE TO QUESTION BOM CLIMATE STATEMENTS OF EXTREMES AND RECORDS

    Another here
    http://www.warwickhughes.com/blog/?p=3384

Australian Bureau of Meteorology claims that NSW has had its hottest October ever – does the data really back up their claim ?

    Extract
“As reader Ian George has pointed out the BoM in their monthly report for New South Wales say – New South Wales in October 2014: Warmest October on record

Following Ian’s lead I have averaged all the District mean monthly max’s and added them to this map of BoM rain districts – I have shaded orange districts that topped a 4 degree anomaly.”

  16. “How could it be getting hotter … if it was really hotter 118 years ago? It’s relatively simple: the early years are simply wiped from the official record.” – Nationals MP George Christensen, House of Representatives, October 29.2014

“Mr Christensen also questions why the Bureau’s official historical temperature record only starts in 1910. He argues that the apparently hot temperatures in 1896 (such as the 50C recorded in Camden, New South Wales, as well as scorching temperatures in Victoria and Western Australia) demolish the Bureau of Meteorology’s claim that 2013 was the hottest Australian year on record.”
